img_00032Ever wish you could have a portble version of Guitar Hero? Sure you could buy a Nintendo DS and Guitar Hero on Tour, but then you’ve got to carry around all that extra stuff. Well I recently discovered “Guitar Rock Tour”, in the iTunes App Store. It could be Guitar hero’s kid brother. You can either play guitar or drums. You get the familiar layout, with the fretboard, the dots coming towards you, and instead of any peripherals, you just tap the buttons on the bottom of the screen.

I played through a few songs, on both guitar and drums, and I must say it works really well. The songs seem to stay in time with the notes, and even on medium, it can get quite challenging. Especially in guitar mode, where you may need 2, 3, or even 4 fingers at a time to hit all the notes. Reviews are mixed, though. Most agree that is great fun, some have had trouble with the app crashing. I did not experience this.

The set it list is great, borrowing from the Guitar Hero model, they have quite a few classics. The first 3 I played were “Rock You Like A Hurricane”, “You Really Got Me”, and “Heart Shaped Box”. Although, I don’t think they are originals, they still sound great, through the headphones, and kinda okay through the external speaker.

Overall, I’m giving this an 8 out of 10. If you’re a fan of the Guitar Hero franchise, you’ll enjoy this app on your iPhone, or iPod Touch. It’s available in the iTunes App Store for $7.99. Here’s a couple more screen shots:
