IMG_0005Video games made from movies, typically, are not great. There have only been a handful of movie games that have been well thought out and actually fun to play. Most times, the video game is made as an afterthought, to be part of the whole package, and to boost ticket sales.

“Terminator Salvation”, the fourth film in the franchise, will be released on May 19th, 2009, along with the video game, available on PS3, XBOX 360, and iPhone. Here’s a brief synopsis of the game, that I pinched from the Wiki: “Set in 2016 in Los Angeles, it is an interquel that takes place between the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation and follows Common‘s Barnes character, though players will assume the control of John Connor. However, Christian Bale refused to lend his voice and likeness for the game. Rose McGowan will be in the game as well, voicing the game-exclusive character Angie Salter, who is an ex-high school teacher. On the other hand, Common and Moon Bloodgood are voicing their own characters from the film (Barnes and Blair, respectively).

The iPhone version is available now. I’ve been playing it for the last few days, and I am a little underwhelmed. It is cool to have a 3rd person shooter on the iPhone, but the controls feel a little clunky and awkward. There is an on screen “analog” stick, similar to “Assassin’s Creed”, and you move the camera by swiping left, right, up, and down, anywhere else on the screen. Firing your weapon is as simple as tapping the fire button, in the bottom right of the screen. After playing for a while, I started to get used to controls, but they weren’t as intuitive as I would have liked.

The graphics are actually pretty decent, for an iPhone game. Bright detailed levels and characters, make it easy to tell what’s going on. The levels are some what simple, with not IMG_0014much room for free roaming. You are guided through the levels with directional arrows and checkpoints. I’ve played through the first couple of levels, and came across a cool mini-game, where the accelerometer is used, as you have to tilt your device to guide a ball through a electrical circuit, to release jailed soldiers. Other levels include riding a motorcycle, and shooting from the back of a moving truck, although, I haven’t gotten to these levels yet, so I can’t give an opinion on this gameplay.

Overall, it is an okay game. If you’re fan of the Terminator franchise, and have been looking for a nice 3rd person shooter on the iPhone, I would recommend this game. I’m gonna give this 3 green candies, out of 5. Terminator Salvation (The Game) is available in the iTunes App Store now, for $5.99.
