First off, your device must be Jailbroken. Currently, the easiest way to Jailbreak, is with the iPhone Dev Team’s “RedSn0w”. It is a GUI app, for Mac and Windows, that will accomplish the Jailbreak on the 1st gen iPhone, the iPhone 3G, and 1st and 2nd gen iPod Touch (there is currently no jailbreak available for iPhone 3GS). Your device must be upgraded to OS 3.0, via iTunes, before running RedSn0w. You can find RedSn0w for Mac and Windows here:

We’ll start with the jailbreak. Download RedSn0w from the link above (the newest version is 0.7.2). Make sure you have a copy of your firmware on your computer. If you upgraded in iTunes, you already have it. On a Mac you can find it here: HDD>Users>your user name here>Library>iTunes>iPhone Software Updates>iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw. On Windows, you find it here: C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name Here\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.

– Open RedSn0w. Click “Browse”, and point to where your firmware is located on your computer (see above).

– Follow the instructions, EXACTLY. This involves putting your iPhone in DFU mode, so pay attention for the prompts. Your iPhone will reboot, when it’s finished.

Now that your jailbroken, with Cydia on your home screen, we can install the patch that allows the hacked apps to work. There are currently 2 methods to accomplish this. The method I have always used, is the MobileInstallation Patch method. In OS 3.0, this is now called “Installd”. Open Cydia and add the repo: To do this, tap “Manage”, on the bottom, then tap “Sources”. Tap “Edit” in the top right, and then “Add”, in the top left. Type in the repository address and tap “Add Source”.

Next, while still in Cydia, tap “Search” in bottom right corner, and type in “Installd”. You should only get one result. Install it.

The other method is from, called “Appsync”. You will need to add this repo: Use the same method, as above. With this one, Cydia will warn you that this repo is known for distributing hacked apps. Just tap “Add Anyway”.

Go back to “Search”, and type “Appsync”. Again, you should only get one result. Install it.

Next, just close Cydia and reboot your device, by pressing and holding the power and home button for about 5 to 10 seconds. Done.

All you need to do now is double click, or drag your .IPA files in to iTunes, connect your device, and sync. iTunes will install the apps and games just as if you had downloaded them from the App Store. If you have any free or paid apps the you have downloaded from the official App Store, not to worry. They will still work just fine.

I will add this: When you do find an app or game, that you’ve installed this way, that you find to be exceptional and/or entertaining, please support the developer, and purchase the app from iTunes. These folks work very hard on their creations, and a lot of them do this for a living. I’ve been a musician for years, so I know that every little bit helps. Don’t think your $.99 is just a drop in the bucket.
