IMG_0031Okay, so there is no such thing as “Shaw Wireless” yet, but, as you may or may not remember, there was a wireless spectrum auction last year, here in Canada. Shaw Communications won a chunk of that spectrum, with plans to enter the wireless market, at some point. To this date, they have not done anything with their piece of the spectrum. As they watched the economy taking a bit of a dive, and saw other wireless providers take a hit, Shaw decided to put their wireless plans on the back burner for a bit.

Hardly any details have been released, about what kind of service Shaw would offer, but we do know that they are planning to use a GSM/HSPA network, similar to Rogers. It is still not clear whether they plan to build their own backbone, or piggy back off another carrier, but either way, this means more competition for Rogers.

It is also unknown what devices Shaw would carry, so we can only speculate that they would want the most popular devices, to lure customers. This would mean iPhone and Blackberry, among others.

We are still long way off from seeing “Shaw Wireless” launched. Telus and Bell will have their GSM/HSPA network up and running, long before Shaw enters the market.
