For the most part, I enjoy using Mac’s Safari browser. It is the only one I’m using, at the moment, but something that has always bothered me, is that damn download window that is always open. I finally decided to do something about it, and found “SafariStand“, from hetima.

SafariStand is a plugin for Safari, that brings more functionality to Apple’s web browser. The function I was looking for, is the ability to set the Downloads window to auto close. You can set it to close immediately, or wait up to a minute. Once SafariStand is installed you get an extra selection in the menu bar, called “Stand”. Here you can access the settings for all the extra functions you have, such as the auto close the Downloads window, a sidebar that shows your open tabs, the ability to change the text encoding, and much more.

SafariStand also adds a new feature to the Action Menu: the ability to copy .flv files (flash movies) from whatever page you’re viewing. This can be used to easily download YouTube videos.

For more advance settings of these new features you go to Stand -> SafariStand settings.

It easy to install SafariStand. Just follow these steps from their website:

– Install SIMBL
– move “SafariStand.bundle” into your SIMBL plugin folder.
* Result path is “/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/SafariStand.bundle”.

This is a Mac only plugin, and is available for Safari 4, in Leopard and Snow Leopard, for free! There are also older versions, if you haven’t upgraded in a while. You can download all versions here.
