I went down to Seattle for the launch of the Apple iPad, and while waiting in line I did a short interview with Nancy Wilson, on CBC, over Skype, from my MacBook.

Apple’s iPad Launch Date Announced: April 3rd, in US

I woke up this morning, and start visiting a few sites that I usually do, but when I get to Apple.com, something looks a little different. My eyes are still blurry from waking up, so I rub them and refocus. Something is different! There is a launch date for the iPad!!

Looks like Apple’s latest device will officially launch, in the US, on April 3rd, with pre-orders beginning March 12th. This is just the WiFi model. The WiFi+3G model does not have an official date yet, but will be available later in April.

No official date for Canada, yet, but Apple has given “late April”, as the expected time of release. Hopefully, Canadians will be able to pre-order, as well.

Pre-orders can be done at the online store, or you can reserve an iPad for pick up, from an Apple Retail Store.

Just one day after iTunes 9.0.3 is released, Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1.3. This update is for iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch. It contains a few bug fixes, but no new features, since 3.1.2.

To update, just connect your device to your computer. If iTunes doesn’t launch automatically, open it. If you are not prompted automatically to update, then just click “Update”, in your device summary. Then, just follow the above prompts.

WARNING: The iPhone Dev Team has advised users with jailbroken devices to hold off on this update, until then can confirm it is safe, and they are able to update their jailbreak tools (redsn0w and Pwnage Tool).

Apple has released an iTunes update today, for Mac and Windows, bringing us up to 9.0.3. iTunes 9.0.3 comes with a few bug fixes, but no new features, since 9.0.2.

• iTunes no longer ignores your “Remember password for purchases” setting.
• Addresses problems with syncing some Smart Playlists and Podcasts with iPod.
• Resolves a problem recognizing when iPod is connected.
• Addresses issues that affect stability and performance.

The iPhone Dev Team have confirmed that this update is safe for all us jailbreakers out there, so no reason not to updates.

If you don’t have the update yet, you can download it, here.

iPad Theme for iPhone

Decided to make a simple iPad theme for my iPhone. Thought I would share it with you. It comes with Lock screen, Wallpaper, and Dock.

I have submitted this theme for hosting on Cydia, via the ModMyi repo, but you can get it here, if you know how to install themes, yourself. Enjoy.

UPDATE: This theme is now live, in Cydia!

What is Apple’s iPad Missing?

Wow. That’s a loaded question, isn’t it? There has been a lot of iPad bashing on the internet, since the announcement of Apple’s “revolutionary” device.

Here’s my opinion: If you were expecting this device to replace your netbook, you’re probably disappointed.

No OS X

It does seem like Apple is going after the netbook market here, but this is not really a “computer”, in the sense that a netbook is. Although the iPhone OS looks pretty amazing on the iPad, it is not the “Mobile OSX” people were hoping for.

No Usable External Ports

There are no external ports, besides the 30 pin dock connection. Couldn’t we have gotten one USB port? There is a USB adapter, but is only for cameras, as far as I know. There is an open API, for this device, so maybe we’ll see some more development with that. They is also a VGA adapter, for video out.

No Multi-tsking or Flash Support

No multi-tasking? Really? Even with that 1Ghz processor in there, you couldn’t figure out multi-tasking? While we’re on the topic of things running in the background, no Adobe Flash support?! Apple has called this “the best way to surf the web”, yet you won’t be able to see half of it, without Flash. Maybe they are banking on HTML5 taking over from Flash? Only Jobs knows.

No Camera

No camera on the front, for video chat. This seems like the perfect device for iChat and video conferencing. Just as we’d like to see this on our iPhone, it even seems more appropriate for the iPad. Although I agree with not having a camera on the back. That would only make this the most awkward camera ever. FSM.com found that the use of a camera is implemented in the SDK. Is this for 3rd party camera devices? A feature that just wasn’t revealed? Who knows, but it seems we will see a camera eventually.

Customization

This is something that wasn’t talked about, very much. From the pictures and videos, we can see that you can change the wallpaper of your homescreen, but is that it? I like that they are starting to learn from the jailbreak community, but they need to open it up a little more here. Same goes for the iPhone and iPod Touch. They could even manage themes, via iTunes.

A Good Name 😉

iPad is catchy and meets the requirements of, one syllable, preceded by the letter “i”, but “pad” doesn’t seem very “techy”. I would have preferred “iSlate” or “iTablet” or even “iMagicMiracleUnicornRainbow”. Ah, whatever. It’s fine.

These are just a few things that I feel are missing from the iPad, and in theory, (and in precedent), can be fixed by the jailbreak community. Let’s get “Backgrounder” and “Winterboard” on the iPad, and we’re getting somewhere.

What is cool about the iPad? Just about everything else. This really seems to be a great device, but, as usual, Apple isn’t using it to it’s full capabilities, in the 1st generation. Look at the first iPhone, compared to the iPhone 3GS. If they didn’t do this, what would make us want to buy the 2nd generation iPad in 2011? It’s just business.

After thinking about it all day, I think I will end up getting an iPad. It is something my whole family can benefit from, and some of the flaws can be fixed with firmware updates.

Apple’s Tablet Announced: It’s the “iPad”

UPDATE: Watch Apple’s Keynote, announcing the iPad. Click here.

Finally, all the rumours can stop. Apple’s new device is called the “iPad”. It’s a giant iPod Touch, but the UI seems to be a cross between the iPhone OS and OSX. It’s looks really cool, but who is it for? I already have an iPhone, iPod Touch, and a MacBook. I don’t feel like I need this product. Well, let’s see what it’s got.

Here’s the details:

– .5 inches thin, 1.5 pounds. 9.56 inches high X 7.47 inches wide.

– LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch, 9.7 inch IPS display, 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi).

– Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating

– powered by Apples own 1GHz Apple A4 chip

– WiFi 802.11n, and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

– Accelerometer and Compass

– comes in 16GB for $499, 32GB for $599,and 64GB for $699. Add $130, if you want 3G. WiFi models shipping March 27th. 3G models shipping April 27th.

– 3G is optional: $14.99 for 250MB and $29.99 for unlimited, on AT&T, in the US. No contract required. International rates coming in June. All 3G iPads are unlocked.

– 10 hours battery life, over a month of standby

– external speaker and microphone

– external buttons same as iPhone: sleep, volume up/down, mute, and home

– iPhone based OS, almost all iPhone/iPod Touch apps will work on the iPad.

– iPhone familier apps including Mobile Safari, Mobile ITunes, App Store, Google Maps, and much more.

– iPhoto-esque app, for pics

– on screen QWERTY keyboard

– HD movies and TV shows

– new app called “iBooks”, for reading eBooks, with new store to  purchase them

– iWork for iPad. Keynote, Numbers, and Pages all get an iPad makeover. They will be $9.99 each.

So, what’s your take on the new device? Is it as revolutionary as they claim? Or is it just a giant iPod Touch? For me, the real revolution will be, when they make the iPhone do all this, in the summer. Can you imagine that 1Ghz chip in your iPhone? That would “scream”. The iPad is great for folks who don’t really need a laptop and don’t want to go as small as an iPod Touch.

The iPad SDK is now being downloaded by developers. They’ve got 2 months to get their apps ready. How long before we see a “jailbroken” iPad OS? Will it be before we even get the hardware? In my opinion, this is where things will get exciting. Let’s see what the jailbreak community can do with the iPad!!
